At WWDC 2024, Apple released the long-awaited operating system upgrade, iOS 18. The event was mostly centred on Apple Intelligence, which is heavily integrated into the next flagships. But, after learning about everything iOS 18 has to offer, one question remains: when will the new iPhone series be released? The iPhone 16 is scheduled to be released in September, as per tradition.
Apple has yet to issue an official announcement on the debut date, but there are extensive rumours around the iPhone 16 series. With various leaks and theories swirling, let’s take a look at the potential specifications and features of the next iPhone 16.
Apple iPhone 16 launch date
The Apple iPhone 16 will be unveiled at a separate hardware event in September 2024. As is customary, the upcoming iPhone models will be released approximately ten days later.
The iPhone 16 lineup will include four devices: the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 16 Plus, and iPhone 16 Pro Max. The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will grow to 6.3 and 6.9 inches, respectively, while the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will remain same in size from its predecessors.
iPhone 16 design
The iPhone 16 is likely to bring significant improvements to the iPhone lineup, with Apple increasing the size of the iPhone 16 Pro to 6.3 inches and the iPhone 16 Pro Max to 6.9 inches, marking the first size upgrade in several years. The size modifications will only affect the iPhone 16 Pro models; the iPhone 16 models will remain the same size as the iPhone 15 models. While the iPhone 16 models will not be larger, they will have some small design changes due to additional buttons, but for the most part, both the normal iPhone 16 models and the Pro variants will resemble the iPhone 15 and 15 Pro models.
Previously, numerous iPhone 15 customers reported overheating concerns with their smartphones. However, this may not be the case with the iPhone 16, as a fresh leak says that tech behemoth Apple intends to address this issue with a number of modifications in the forthcoming iPhone lineup.
We are very positive that Apple will unveil a completely new button with all upcoming iPhone 16 models. The blogosphere has dubbed this one the Capture Button, and it will allow iPhone 16 owners to capture videos or snap images with a single tap (or click).
According to rumours, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus would feature vertical camera lens setups at the back, as opposed to prior iPhone models, which all had diagonal camera arrangements. This modification will allow normal iPhone 16 models to capture spatial video meant for the Apple Vision Pro headset. Color-wise, we might see the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max in Space Black, White, Grey, and Rose, while the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will apparently be available in black, green, pink, blue, and white.
Apple iPhone 16 will have an A-Series chip
Apple is developing new A-series CPUs for the iPhone 16 family, based on the latest N3E 3-nanometer node. We could see some improvements in efficiency and performance, but we haven’t heard anything specific about what to expect. The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro could employ different CPUs, with the higher-end chip reserved for the Pro devices. We are convinced that Apple will adopt 3nm CPUs in all future iPhones. The iPhone 16/iPhone 16 Plus may receive the normal version of the upcoming A18 Bionic chip, while the two iPhone 16 Pro models may be outfitted with the Apple A18 Pro processor. We expect both CPUs to increase performance and battery life, but the Apple A18 Pro should have the advantage.
Apple iPhone 16 A-Series Camera details
Apple is planning a new vertical camera lens arrangement for the iPhone 16 models, which will differ from the previous diagonal lens setup. The new orientation should allow regular iPhone 16 models to capture spatial video with the Vision Pro headset. Apple is also likely to release the Tetraprism 5x optical zoom lens for the iPhone 16 Pro, so it may not be confined to the iPhone 16 Pro Max this year.
The Action Button, which was previously reserved to iPhone 15 Pro models, will be expanded to all four iPhone 16 models in 2024, and the iPhone 16 series will also include a new “Capture Button” for taking photos and movies. The Capture Button will behave similarly to the shutter button on a digital camera, detecting different degrees of pressure for focussing and then capturing an image.
